The mood at Lazio's home ground was far from happy this past Saturday. The home side was losing against Torino, a side that had conceded 10 goals while managing only two goals in their last five league matches. Fans from the Curva Nord were concluding their latest protest in a continuous dispute with club owner Claudio Lotito.
This Year's Efforts Unraveling?
Had their campaign coming unstitched, or did there exist any cohesion holding it together in the first place? The club brought back Maurizio Sarri as manager during the off-season, only for him to later acknowledge that the board had failed to disclose a registration embargo they were facing for fiscal problems. Reports that he could resign were unfounded, but he stated that Lotito had "swindled" him.
The Roman club became as messy on the pitch as they were off it, beating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but being defeated in the rest of their initial five matches, which included the capital clash. Throughout this period, it has been hard to tell if they are improving or self-destructing.
The Youngster's Unforeseen Comeback
At least one man kept smiling amid the chaos. Matteo Cancellieri had not been expected to remain with Lazio this year. He was on the last one on loan at Parma and, during the summer break, Lazio were advocating for him to stay there temporarily. The registration embargo necessitated a reconsideration. They were unable to weaken their team with no new signings.
He signed initially during Sarri's previous tenure, back then just 20 years old alumnus of Verona's academy. He recorded 20 league appearances for Lazio in 2022-23, all but one of those coming off the bench. The ex- sporting director, Igli Tare, who departed following that term, subsequently claimed Sarri of "promising everyone Cancellieri would be a star then never playing him."
Finding His Best Role
It's possible the coach was persistently working to work out the exact type of his skill set. Labeled as an attacking winger on arrival, Cancellieri yet was deployed for much of that season as an ineffective backup to Ciro Immobile as center forward. During 63 outings while playing for Empoli and Parma over the last two seasons, he netted seven goals. Shoehorn
