Individuals Discontinuing Slimming Medications Regain Weight Four Times Faster Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management often requires long-term strategies.

New research indicates that individuals who discontinue blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt conventional lifestyle programs.

Findings released in a leading medical journal points out that while overweight people often shed a large proportion of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"Users using such medications need to be cognizant of the potential of fast rebound weight gain when the medication is stopped," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain implies a return to pre-treatment mass in about one and a half years.

Analyzing Approaches

The research, which reviewed dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the results of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.

Researchers note that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise usually see a more gradual creep back—around 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

Explaining the Quick Regain

Doctors suggest the way of the injections is key to understanding the accelerated rebound.

The injections copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate appetite.

"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations far above than the body's typical production may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and could diminish sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Stopping of this medication leads to appetite is no longer kept in check, making binge eating much more probable."

A Chronic Issue?

Medical guidelines suggest the injections for individuals with weight-linked health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts say that, due to the high risk of weight regain, the therapy should be considered long-term.

This opinion is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "underscore the long-term character of obesity," similar to managing diseases like hypertension.

User Experiences

Users who have come off the medication describe a powerful resurgence of hunger.

"I experienced a trigger activating and you're instantly starving," recalled a patient.

This challenge is worsened if users have not adopted sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.

Widespread Adoption

Recent estimates indicate that millions of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire remaining high.

  • Adoption is greater among women than men.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the highest usage rates.
  • Many access the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, researchers stress that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone solution and long-term success likely depends on combined behavioural changes.
