Meteorological devices containing a large quantity of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was compelled to shut down for several hours when multiple of them drifted across the country's airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The temporary shutdown led to 30 flight cancellations disrupting six thousand travelers, with officials warning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Authorities reported that 25 meteorological balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two balloons ending up precisely above the airport's airspace.
Approximately 14 of the meteorological devices sent during the weekend floated over the metropolitan zone, which is home to Lithuania's main urban center and adjacent to the Belarusian boundary.
Contraband Recovery

Regional Smuggling Pattern
While creating issues, representatives clarified that "Balloons with contraband - Belarusian smoking products - are common occurrences in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
To date in the current year, 544 balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were noted during the prior year.
Regional Consequences
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has documented over numerous instances in which illegal goods were transported from its border nation utilizing the meteorological equipment.
Illegal Transport Methods
When questioned about why criminals use a method that is particularly vulnerable to weather elements rather than easier to manage drones, authorities explained that "Weather devices are basic instruments used by contraband transporters - they are less expensive than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Authorities continued that "Our services' aim is to capture the greatest possible amounts of illegal goods and to apprehend coordinators and participants so that such operations become unprofitable and present no risk to commercial air travel."
International Concerns
The recent incidents occur during an era marked by increased concerns in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have created aviation problems across the region.
Parallel situations in neighboring countries have prompted European leaders to speed up talks about improving airspace protection throughout the continent.
