Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in employing replay technology.
Video review systems are set to arrive at Wimbledon this year.
Competitors will gain the ability to challenge specific rulings made by the chair umpire, echoing the system already in place at both the US Open and the Aussie major.
This innovation will be accessible on Centre Court and Court One for the duration of the tournament and on the other four show courts when they are staging singles matches.
This step arrives only a season following the All England Club introduced electronic line calling, which brought an end to the longstanding tradition of line judges.
Reviewable Decisions
Competitors will not be permitted to dispute the call of the ELC system, but are allowed to ask for the official to review other situations, including:
- If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
- If a ball made contact with an rival's racket or person during play.
- Potential interference end of a rally.
Notably, there will be no cap on the amount of challenges a competitor can initiate.
Practical Application
An illustrative case occurred in Indian Wells last week, where a top player initiated the review system against Jack Draper.
Draper conceded it was a difficult call for the umpire, but believed his rival had "used the regulations effectively."
Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and determined Draper was responsible for interference, granting the point to his opponent.
Wider Implementation
This technology aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. The system has been in use at the American major for two years and the Australian Open this year.
Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the ATP circuit plans to have the system implemented at every one of its events.
Additional Innovations
Another change at Wimbledon 2025 will be the introduction of graphical cues on scoreboards to support the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.
This solves situations where the crowd have sometimes been unsure if a shot was in or out.
In other news, with precisely 100 days remaining until the start of the tournament, the AELTC have further announced an increase in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
